COVID-19 restrictions may have meant pupils at St Joseph’s Primary School in Helensburgh couldn’t put on their usual Nativity performances for parents, family and friends – but that didn’t stop them staging a show to remember!

Instead of a live performance on stage, ingenious approaches by staff allowed the children from Pre-5 up to P3 to perform their Nativity shows and Christmas songs/poems while keeping all safety regulations in place.

They did all this by filming their performances and uploading them to Google Classroom for parents to see.

Looking back on the unique show, head teacher Michelle Collins said: “Pre-5 created two performances in order for them to keep to their ‘bubbles’.

“These were narrated by the children’s key workers and performed to excellent standard by the children themselves.

“P1 then created their own Nativity play, on location in the school grounds. Excellent efforts and acting made sure their performances were top class – with a teaser trailer of their film being sent to parents before the weekend and the finished article then being available to view digitally on the Monday.

“This was a glorious success with the parents delighted with the children’s efforts.

“To finish their performance, P1 then used sign language to perform ‘Away in a Manger’.

“Although indoor singing is not permitted at the moment, P2 overcame this barrier by playing a recording of ‘Jingle Bells’ and performing the words via BSL sign language – another ingenious treat for parents!

“P3 then acted out the poem ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’ – filmed again and uploaded to Google Classroom.

“Christmas was indeed able to be celebrated at St Joseph’s – and a good time was had by all!”
