A MAN has appeared in court after allegedly being found more than five times the legal drink drive limit following a crash near Helensburgh.

Officers attended a report of a vehicle having crashed and blocked the A817 Haul Road between Garelochhead and Luss at Glen Fruin shortly after 1am on Tuesday morning, December 15.

When police arrived at the scene of the crash, a 2006 plate Ford Mondeo was discovered with extensive damage, having struck a fence.

Police say the driver was not at the scene.

However, after carrying out a brief search of the area, officers located a man walking nearby.

He was identified as a 39-year-old from Renton and it was confirmed he had been behind the wheel of the car at the time of the crash.

The man allegedly failed a preliminary roadside breath test, and was arrested at the scene before being taken to Clydebank police office.

Further samples of breath taken at the police station reportedly provided a reading which was more than five times the legal limit of 22 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

He was kept in custody and appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court the next working day.
