While we all entered 2021 with a sense of optimism, there is now an understandable sense of frustration and disappointment that we are once again living under tough lockdown restrictions.

However, the new variant of Covid presents huge pressures for our NHS and we must all do our bit by following the current restrictions in place to drive down the spread of the virus.

The vaccines we are rolling out offer us light at the end of the tunnel and the best way of fighting back against Covid.

It is welcome that, following continuous pressure from the Scottish Conservatives, the SNP are now going to publish daily vaccination figures. That will let people see the progress that is being made and a way forward out of restrictions.

I would like to thank everyone working locally in our NHS and every other key worker for continuing to go above and beyond the call of duty in working on the frontline during these unprecedented times.

And to everyone doing their bit in following the rules and staying at home unless for essential reasons, I give you this message of reassurance: your efforts will be worth it.

READ MORE: New mental health service opens at Vale of Leven Hospital

Just before Christmas, I was delighted to attend the official opening of the new mental health service at the Vale of Leven Hospital.

I have been proud to work alongside the Defence Medical Welfare Service to deliver this enhanced service at the Vale, which is now well up and running.

With the current measures that are in place, ensuring that mental health services are routinely available for people in their local area is vital – as is supporting the future of the Vale of Leven Hospital.

All too often we hear about the threats that exist to the Vale, but this new service is enhancing what is available for patients at the facility.

It has been a long campaign that I have fought, ever since I was elected as a MSP in 2016, but it is one that I am so pleased to see come to fruition.
