A HELENSBURGH woman has said she is “honoured and delighted” to have been appointed as Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Dunbartonshire.

Linda Moffat will take up the role after it was approved by Her Majesty the Queen.

The Lieutenancy’s duties include representing the Queen at ceremonies, such as 100th birthdays, and identifying individuals and organisations deserving of recognition for their service.

Linda told the Advertiser: “I’m very honoured and delighted to have been appointed to such a prestigious and historic role.

“The fundamental principle concerning the office of the Lord-Lieutenant is to act as the Queen’s representative in the county, so I take tremendous pride in being asked to fulfil some of those responsibilities.

“Once these lockdown restrictions are lifted, it’ll be wonderful to get into the grassroots community and do the jobs that we in the Lieutenancy need to fulfil.”

Originally from Lincolnshire, Linda has lived in Helensburgh for 25 years.

She served with the Women’s Royal Navy Service in 1984 and was employed as a shore-based operations officer at a time when it was largely unknown for women to undertake such roles.

Linda ‘s military service included spells at HM Naval Base Clyde and at the Royal Naval Airforce Station at Yeovilton in Somerset, where she was the first female operations officer of a front-line helicopter squadron.

She went on to hold senior positions in international events organisations, including the 1988 Glasgow Garden Festival.

Linda said: “I’ve been in Scotland since 1985 when I came up to organise the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. When I finished working on the Glasgow Garden Festival, it was work that brought me over to Helensburgh.”

Helensburgh’s James Rogers has also been appointed Deputy Lieutenant.

Linda said: “Jim is a former RAF pilot and a retired British Airways captain.

“We are delighted to have him on board, and we look forward to working with him.

“The sooner we’ve all had our jabs, the sooner we will be able to get out in the community and fulfil all these jobs.”
