SIX candidates will do battle to represent the Helensburgh and Lomond South area in a by-election for Argyll and Bute Council next month.

The four main Scottish parties are all represented, while there are also candidates from the Scottish Green Party and the Workers' Party.

The by-election is being held following the death last October of long-serving councillor Ellen Morton, a former depute leader of the authority.

The six candidates, in alphabetical order by surname, are as follows:

Henry Boswell (Scottish Liberal Democrats)

Paul Burrows (Workers' Party)

Math Campbell-Sturgess (Scottish National Party)

Mike Crowe (Scottish Green Party)

Jane Kelly (Scottish Labour Party)

Gemma Penfold (Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party)

The by-election is due to be held on Thursday, March 18.

A by-election is due to take place on the same day in the Isle of Bute ward following the death of the council's Provost, Len Scoullar, in November.

However, the Notice of Election, published last month, states that returning officer Pippa Milne has the power to delay the election in either or both wards, should coronavirus lockdown restrictions require it.

If the by-election date is delayed, the poll will be held no later than Thursday, May 6 – the same date as the Scottish Parliament election.
