HELENSBURGH shopworkers are stepping up their fund-raising efforts by setting a target of completing 10 million steps during March in aid of charity.

Twenty-five Morrisons employees have signed up to the challenge so far, with all proceeds collected going to Clic Sargent, the UK’s biggest children and young people’s cancer charity.

A JustGiving page has been set up online and the team hope to raise at least £1,000, as well as increase awareness of the work that the organisation does.

The store’s community champion, Alison Sturgeon, originally signed up for a 500,000 solo step challenge and asked her people manager, Leigh McMurdo, to join her, before more colleagues got on board.

Alison said: “I decided to make it a team challenge as some staff have sedentary jobs on checkouts or laptops, which makes half a million steps in one month impossible.

“By consolidating our steps as a team effort, we have had far more colleagues joining in which means more life-saving funds will be raised.

“Morrisons has raised over £10 million in our three-year charity partnership with Clic Sargent, and this is our final year with them, so we want to raise at least £1,000 with our step challenge and increase awareness of the amazing work that they do.

“As a new store with many new colleagues, I wanted to find a way of bringing us all together and I’m delighted to see so many of us teaming up for such a great cause.”

Taking part so far are: Alison Sturgeon, Leigh McMurdo, Scot Byers, Amanda Sims, Stewart Jenkins, Kenny Gorman, Zandra Clark, Duncan McMillan, Steven Flood, Jenn McKenzie, Samantha Chapuis, Lisette Sandoval, David Neil Butler, Debbie Cox McCormick, Robert Bell, Adam Conway, Hilary Cameron, Lorraine Johnston, Natalie Kerr, Jamie Logan, Sally Williams Daly, Laurie Ann McKinnon, Susan Ellis, Chloe Pearce, and Bronwyn Jones.

More information is available on the ‘Morrisons Helensburgh - Customer and Community’ Facebook page, and money can be donated in-store to charity buckets at the till points and kiosk.
