PEOPLE living in the Helensburgh and Lomond South area have just a few days left to register to vote in the area’s forthcoming council by-election.

Polling day is on Thursday, March 18, and anyone wishing to vote must register - if they haven’t already done so - by Tuesday, March 2.

To register online visit gov.uk/register-to-vote, or contact the Argyll and Bute electoral registration office on 0800 980 0470.

Six candidates will do battle for the local seat, which was left vacant following the death of long-serving Liberal Democrat councillor Ellen Morton in October.

You can also vote by post or by proxy - where you appoint someone to cast your vote on your behalf.

The deadline for postal vote applications is 5pm on Wednesday, March 3.

If you want to apply for a proxy vote, you need to do so by 5pm on Wednesday, March 10.

The ward covers part of northern and north-eastern Helensburgh, including the Clyde Arran estate and the Churchill area, as well as Colgrain and Craigendoran.

It also takes in the whole of Cardross as well as the hamlet of Ardoch and part of the south-eastern shore of Loch Lomond from the border with West Dunbartonshire north of Cameron House.

Voters will choose between Henry Boswell (Scottish Liberal Democrats), Paul Burrows (Workers’ Party), Math Campbell-Sturgess (Scottish National Party), Mike Crowe (Scottish Green Party), Jane Kelly (Scottish Labour Party) and Gemma Penfold (Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party).
