A VINTAGE motor yacht built in Rosneath almost 80 years ago has been sold in an online auction – for less than the cost of a tank of fuel.

The 30-foot wooden-hulled vessel, designed by the renowned boatbuilding firm of James A. Silver & Son, was put up for sale on eBay last week.

The seller warned that the yacht, named Ginny, “needs complete restoration”, and advised prospective buyers that “absolutely everything will need to be done”.

Bidding closed at 9.50pm on March 21 – and the winning bidder secured ownership for just £22.

They added: “This really is a project for an experienced individual who would want to give her a total rebuild over time. I’m afraid I don’t have the experience or time to restore her.”

Built in 1935, the vessel is currently located at Retreat Boatyard in the small Devon town of Topsham, south of Exeter.

The Rosneath site has been home to a boatyard since the late 19th century and has been operated as Silvers Marine Services since 1983.
