A MAN was arrested in Helensburgh town centre after reportedly being found under the influence and in possession of drugs.

Officers attended Sinclair Street at around 7.30pm on Saturday, March 20 after receiving reports of a male sitting on the pavement apparently under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

A 26-year-old man from Ben Bouie Drive was found at the location and was allegedly seen to conceal an item in his underwear as officers approached.

The man was secured by police and agreed to produce the item, which he did, before reportedly trying to discard it. The item was recovered and found to be a small bag of white tablets, according to police.

The man was then arrested so officers could carry out a full search at Helensburgh police station, and while being taken there he was again allegedly seen trying to discard an item.

This item was also recovered and found to be another small bag containing white tablets believed to be Valium.

The man was released and will be reported to the procurator fiscal for alleged possession of controlled drugs and obstruction of a search.
