NEW national minimum wage rates are now in place across the UK from today, April 1.

Back in March, Chancellor Rushi Sunak confirmed in his spring budget that from April 1, 2021, workers aged 23 and over will see their salary increase.

The previous age threshold of 25 and over for the National Living Wage has now been lowered to 23.

The National Living Wage was introduced in 2016 for those aged 25 and over, while school leavers up until 23 years-old still come under the National Minimum Wage system.

Here are the old rates from April 2020 to March 2021 by age bracket:

  • 25 and over: £8.72
  • 21 to 24: £8.20
  • 18 to 20: £6.45
  • Under 18: £4.55
  • Apprentice: £4.15

Here are the new rates that are now in effect:

  • 23 and over: £8.91
  • 21 to 22: £8.36
  • 18 to 20: £6.56
  • Under 18: £4.62
  • Apprentice: £4.30
