POLICE in Helensburgh and Lomond are urging all road users to be considerate of those on horses following reports of reckless driving.

Argyll and West Dunbartonshire policing division issued the plea after a driver was charged with dangerous driving in rural Argyll earlier this month, having allegedly driven at speed towards a group of horse riders.

PC Laura Evans from Police Scotland said: “Most horse riders would prefer not to ride on the roads, however often this is a necessity.

“Riders have the same right to be on the road as motorists, cyclists or any other user group.

"With understanding and consideration on all sides, there is room for everyone to use the roads safely.”

Motorists should always give animals a wide berth and drive at around 15mph.

The British Horse Society says more than 100 horses and riders have been killed or injured on Scottish roads since 2010.
