MORE than 60 volunteers made the most of a sunny Saturday morning in Cardross to help clear a winter’s worth of marine litter from the village’s shoreline.

The event was organised by Cardross Community Council, with the help of the Cardross CAN climate action group, and saw helpers of all ages pitch in with sacks, wheelbarrows and litter pickers to get the beach looking at its best once again.

Community councillor Bob Murray said: “The spring beach clean was a terrific success with over 60 volunteers coming out to help pick up the rubbish that gets washed up.

“This was a record turn-out and it was great to see so many youngsters bagging the litter with such enthusiasm. The weather was kind to us and this no doubt helped to swell the numbers.

“While it’s depressing that so much rubbish ends up in our rivers, lochs and sea, it is encouraging that the message appears to be getting through that this is an immense problem and it needs to be tackled.

“The beach clean is organised by Cardross Community Council and we are grateful for the energetic assistance of Cardross CAN in drumming up support.

“As ever, our thanks go to everyone who got up early on Saturday [May 1] to help clean our beach.”
