MORE than a hundred new cases of Covid have been confirmed in Argyll and Bute in the space of a week, health officials say.

And more than a third of those are in a single neighbourhood in Helensburgh and Lomond.

According to the latest figures released by Public Health Scotland there were 101 cases in Argyll and Bute in the seven days to June 16 – compared to 87 for the week to June 15, 63 for the week to June 14, and 42 for the week to June 13.

Of the 101 confirmed positive tests in the week leading up to June 16 – the most recent date for which figures are available – 36 were in the Garelochhead neighbourhood.

That area includes HM Naval Base Clyde and the whole of the Rosneath peninsula, as well as Garelochhead itself, though the MoD previously told the Advertiser there had been no spike in cases among personnel at the base.

Officials at NHS Highland warned there is now a "significant situation" in the area and that cases were expected to rise further in the coming days.

Elsewhere, the Cowal North neighbourhood – which includes Arrochar and Tarbet – had six cases, Helensburgh Centre had five, and Helensburgh East and Helensburgh West and Rhu each had three in the week to June 16.

Health bosses previously asked people in communities where there's been a spike in cases to "try to minimise contact with others to limit any further spread and access PCR testing in order to try to contain the outbreaks.

If you develop symptoms or are identified as a close contact of someone who has tested positive, the health advice is to self-isolate and get a PCR test – kits are available through NHS Inform.
