SEVERAL Helensburgh businesses have been awarded “plastic free champion” status by the organisation behind efforts to cut down on single use plastics across the UK.

Rossdhu Refills in West Princes Street, run by Rhiannon May, started life as Zero Waste Helensburgh in 2019, around the same time as the Plastic Free Helensburgh campaign was set up with the aim of making the town a “cleaner and greener” community.

The shop sources its products ethically and sustainably, and as locally to Helensburgh as possible.

It also sources products only from suppliers who use environmentally-friendly packaging, and asks prospective suppliers to switch from plastic packaging.

Customers are encouraged to cut their plastic consumption by using refillable containers, while the store also uses closed-loop systems for all its liquid refills, and boxes or packaging used in orders to the shop are either reused by the business or are offered to the community for re-use before being recycled.

Posting on Facebook Rhiannon said she was “super pleased” with the award from environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage, which was the result of a nomination from Plastic Free Helensburgh.

Also joining Rossdhu Refills on the 'plastic free champion' list are The Toy Shop, Helensburgh Cycles and Fabric and Finery, all in West Clyde Street, Nature's Harvest and Sommerville Butcher in West Princes Street, and Portincaple-based Vanilla Rose.
