GORDON REID'S place in the Great Britain team for this summer's Paralympics has been confirmed.

The former Hermitage Academy pupil, who won singles gold at the 2016 Games in Rio, was always a safe bet for a place in the wheelchair tennis line-up for Tokyo – but his spot, along with those for most of the athletes in both Team GB and Parlaympics GB, has now been confirmed.

Reid, who won his second singles title of 2021 at the cinch Championships at Queen's Club in London at the weekend, is one of six Brits who will compete in the wheelchair tennis event in Tokyo.

Also competing in the men's singles will be Alfie Hewett and Dermot Bailey, while Reid and Hewett will be the sole GB representatives in the men's doubles.

The duo recently set a new record for the most successful Grand Slam pairing in British tennis history and will be aiming to go one better than they managed in Rio, when they won silver after losing out to the French pairing of Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer.

The remaining tennis players in the Paralympics GB squad for Tokyo are Andy Lapthorne, who will compete in the quad singles, and Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker, who will be going for gold in the women's singles and doubles, having won doubles bronze in Rio.

The Tokyo Paralympics take place from August 24 to September 5, with the wheelchair tennis competitions due to held between August 27 and September 4.
