Loving tributes have been paid to the owner of Helensburgh's friendliest feline after he passed away this week.

George the cat, who lives with Elizabeth and Dennis Royal in the town, has become a local celebrity in recent years with his antics attracting hundreds of likes and comments on social media, and a Facebook page set up in his name reaching thousands of followers from across the globe.

However, George's latest update brought his followers the sad news that Dennis had passed away at the age of 92.

In a statement on social media George announced: "I am very sad to tell you all that my beloved hooman Dennis passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday night at the age of 92.

"He was very frail at the end and had stopped eating. He lived a long, full life, illness free, until his dementia made it impossible for him to stay at home.

"I did get to visit him several times in the Argyll Care Home, where he received excellent care, and I will treasure those memories."

One Helensburgh resident said: "I am so sorry for your and your family's loss. We know how much Dennis was loved by you and your family. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you."

Another added: "Don't be sad George because those we love walk beside us every day unheard and unseen. I hope you both have many long walks together in spirit."

The mischievous moggy is regularly spotted patrolling the streets and posing for photos, while he is known to frequent local supermarkets and even hopped on board public transport for a sightseeing trip elsewhere.

In September 2019 he was reunited with his owners after straying around 14 miles from home and being found at Firkin Point, north of Luss.

That led to speculation that George might have hopped on public transport to take a trip to his favourite beauty spot, as he has previously been caught in the act trying to get on buses.
