A CHARITY fund-raiser due to take place in Helensburgh this weekend has been cancelled.

The Rotary Club of Helensburgh Garelochside had organised a Mad Hatters Tea Party – with fancy dress optional – to be held at the Lomond School sports hall on Rhu Road Higher on Saturday, August 14.

But the club has now announced the event will no longer take place.

It's understood that poor advance ticket sales lay behind the decision to cancel the fund-raiser, which was to have raised money for the global Rotary movement's efforts to eradicate polio around the world.

A spokesperson said: "Regrettably Helensburgh Garelochside Rotary Club has had to cancel the Mad Hatters Tea Party on August 14.

"All those who bought tickets may have a full refund from Stewart Travel in Sinclair Street.

"Our grateful thanks to all in the retail sector who supported the idea, and also Lomond School, which offered the use of their sports hall.

"To all those who bought tickets, the club shares your disappointment.

"The club naturally intends to continue its fundraising efforts in many different ways and we hope that the community will be able to support future fundraising activities.

"The Mad Hatter may yet be seen again – watch this space!"
