GORDON REID has missed out in his bid for a second Paralympic gold medal.

The Helensburgh wheelchair tennis hero - who was singles champion in Rio in 2016 - and fellow Brit Alfie Hewett had to settle for silver after they lost out to France's Stephane Houdet and Nicolas Peifer in the gold medal match in Tokyo on Friday.

In a tense match lasting for three hours and 25 minutes on centre court at the Ariake Tennis Park in Tokyo, Houdet and Peifer won 7-5, 0-6, 7-6 (3).

It's the second successive Paralympics in which the Frenchmen have defeated Reid and Hewett in the gold metal match.

The 29-year-old former Hermitage Academy pupil will go for his fourth Paralympic medal on Saturday, when he faces off against Hewett in the men’s singles bronze medal match.
