HELENSBURGH wheelchair tennis star Gordon Reid has won the singles bronze medal at the Tokyo Paralympics.

Reid played a difficult match against his doubles partner and friend Alfie Hewett after three sets in more than two hours.

The former Hermitage Academy pupil won the first set before losing the second. He was leading 5-2 in the third set but Hewett pulled back and nearly forced the match to a tie-breaker.

Reid, 29, won 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 against Hewett to earn the fourth Paralympic tennis medal for Team GB.

Reid and Hewett, who have triumphed in the last seven Grand Slam tournaments they've played together, won doubles silver but had to face each other for the singles bronze.

Commentators noted repeatedly how little emotion both players showed through the match and how quiet the few team supporters were as the good friends competed for a medal.

It could be Hewett's last Paralmypics outing with classification changes looking set to force him out of wheelchair tennis.

The pair will be back on court together soon at the US Open.
