A “SELFLESS” local hero from Helensburgh who helped her elderly neighbours through lockdown has been chosen for a very special honour by the town's MSP.

Liz Simpson has been announced as the winner of Jackie Baillie’s Scottish Parliament 'Local Hero' award in recognition of her support to vulnerable residents during the pandemic.

The Kirkmichael woman, who was also named as one of the Advertiser’s Helensburgh and Lomond lockdown heroes last May, collected and delivered food parcels to those in need, along with prescriptions, newspapers and anything else they required.

Local heroes from each of Scotland’s 129 parliamentary constituencies have taken part in the opening ceremonies at Holyrood in 2007, 2011 and 2016, and Liz will be invited to contribute to the upcoming opening ceremony at the Scottish Parliament in October.

Ms Baillie said: “I was delighted to choose Liz as my Scottish Parliament local hero.

“It was a very tough choice given all the fantastic people who had been nominated for the award - all of whom truly are local heroes.

“The individual who nominated Liz did so because of how selfless Liz was throughout the depths of the pandemic.

“This is such a wonderful, thoughtful thing to have done and Liz should be really proud of the difference that she has made in our community.”
