HANDY helpers in Cardross and Helensburgh did their bit for the environment recently by clearing bags of rubbish from the area.

The Cardross autumn beach clean took place last Saturday morning and more than 50 volunteers filled around 30 bags of waste, mostly made up of plastic bottles and cans, with quite a bit of glass and one vehicle wheel.

Organised by Cardross Community Council, the clean-up was supported by plenty of young people, including members of the local Scout troop keen to play their part.

Organisers thanked the village’s parish church for providing a lunch, with tea and coffee, to volunteers after the event.

Meanwhile a similar event, this time organised by Helensburgh Community Council, also took place on Saturday on the town’s foreshore - in less than perfect weather.

Twelve bags of rubbish were collected and volunteers were thanked for their efforts.

Finally, a successful litter pick was held in the woods behind and beside Hermitage Academy after school last Thursday.

Five members of staff and eight pupils collected and sorted 13 bags (32.92 kg) of litter, logging their actions as part of Surfers Against Sewage’s Million Mile Clean.
