ORGANISERS of a “paper chain” project in Helensburgh say their world record bid will have to wait until the new year.

Burgh businesses joined together earlier this year to create a paper chain, made up of knitted or crocheted links, stretching from Sinclair Street to William Street in the town.

Members of the public were invited to contribute items and the aim was to get into the Guinness World Records.

However, a combination of consultations with book bosses and recent advice that record attempts should be postponed because of concerns around the risk of Covid has meant that the actual record attempt will not be completed in time for this Christmas.

Toni Howard, of the Olde Christmas Shoppe, said: “We are disappointed that we have not been able to go ahead with the record attempt this year but are looking forward to seeing the chain unveiled at the Winter Festival.

“We have been delighted by the response to the project and by the incredible amount of work that has been done by groups and individuals throughout the area and are determined that it will not be wasted.”

And Karlyn Marshall of Helensburgh Art Hub added: ”We remain really excited about this project and have thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the parts of the chain coming in.

"Now we are looking for volunteers to join us to help sew the chain together ready for its first unveiling at the Winter Festival.

“And once that is done we will continue to add inks until such time as we are able to complete the discussions with GWR and get the record documentation complete. Thank you to everyone who has taken part so far.

“If there is anyone out there who would like to help with the first big stitch-up please let us know by emailing helensburgharthubworkshops.com.”

The 'community links' project is being supported by the Olde Christmas Shoppe, Helensburgh Art Hub, Let's Promote and the In and Around Helensburgh Tourist Guide.
