ORGANISERS of a long-running weekly book sale in Helensburgh are asking for help from fans of the written word to come up with a new name for the recently reopened service.

During Scottish Book Week (November 15-21) Helensburgh Community Hub wants to rebrand and grow the current once-a-week offering.

The East Princes Street building, which is now owned by the community following a buy out from the Red Cross, will hold an official opening event on Wednesday, December 15 - and while the facility has been transformed in the 12 months since the takeover it is hoped that a fresh title for the ever-popular book sale will encourage more people to check out what else is now available at the venue.

Development manager Gill Simpson said: “What better time than Scottish Book Week to think about revamping the hub book sale?

“We have the most amazing collection of books, all donated to us to raise money for the upkeep and development of the hub.

“It’s really more of a bookshop than a book sale, so we want to have more opening hours next year and to give it a brand new name.

“New volunteers have joined the fantastic Wednesday team, and we are transforming the space into a welcoming cosy place for people to enjoy a bit of quiet reading, do a jigsaw or just pop in for a chat.

“We are keen to know what other opening hours would work for the people of Helensburgh. Should we open after work sometimes, or at the weekend?”

The volunteer book sale team, pictured above, have around 60 years of book selling experience between them and Gill is confident that the bookshop - the only dedicated one in Helensburgh - will be a welcome place for everyone and a valuable resource for the town.

At next month’s official launch event there will be coffee and mince pies and a festive book sale with gift wrapping for any books that are Christmas presents.

And after school there will be Christmas crafts and story time from 3.30-4.30pm, before yoga teacher Fiona Marshall hosts a breathing and relaxation session from 5-6pm.

All are welcome, and you can suggest a new name for the book sale or more opening times that you would like through the Hub Facebook page or by emailing manager@helensburghcommunityhub.org.uk.
