RHU Amateurs boss Sam Gemmell says he hopes his team's cup win last weekend can breed confidence in his side as they seek to put points on the board in the league.

The club's Greater Glasgow squad secured a spot in the second round of the Bobby Thomson Challenge Cup by dispatching Pollok AFC 3-0.

League duties were put aside as the team hosted their Glasgow counterparts and with overnight rain putting paid to playing on grass the game went ahead at the local 4G pitch.

Third Division Pollok had their eyes on a cup shock as they faced a Rhu team who were in the middle of a bad run of results in their own league but thankfully the home team responded to the challenge.

Rhu took the lead ten minutes in. Jamie Paterson with great vision spotted an intended pass between the Pollok midfield 30 yards out and being first to the ball struck it first time, the ball flying into the top left hand corner of the net leaving the keeper with no chance.

The hosts increased their lead five minutes later, Jamie McKee sliding the ball home from close range after some fine work by Ryan Jones.

In control of the game they should have scored a few more before the half time whistle but missed opportunities by front two Jeffrey and Jones meant they closed out the half with the score remaining as it was.

In most of the games this season there has been a dip in form after the restart and with warnings not to fall into that trap again the boys took the game to the visitors.

Callum Dodds having an excellent game in the middle of the park dictated the play and once again chances came and went to the forwards who on another day could have racked up a fair few between them.

Pollok did mount some resistance in the middle part of the second half and it was only two magnificent last gasp tackles by Gerraint Meader that stopped them going one on one with Gemmell in goals.

However the game was put beyond them in the 80th minute, Ryan Jones firing the ball into the bottom right hand corner of the net after finding some space in the box.

The win takes the local team into the next round where they will face another third division team in Boswell AFC.

Manager Gemmell was delighted with the win and the performance.

He said: “It was good to see the guys responding from last week and the clear the air chat we had after the game last week seems to have worked.

“The work rate was good and some of our football was as good as it’s been all season.

“Confidence is everything and hopefully this gives us a boost that we can take into our league performances and start putting points on the board.”

Squad: Gemmell, Cameron, Meader, McKell, Johns, Paterson, Dods, McKee, Caldwell, Jeffrey, Jones, Alexander, Porter.

Elsewhere last Saturday, Rhu’s Caledonian League squad lost 5-0 away to Dunblane SC.

This Saturday, December 11, both Rhu sides are on league duty: the club’s GGPAFL squad are away to Westerlands (KO 2pm), while the Caledonian League team play host to Cambusbarron Rovers with a 1.30pm start.
