A VOLUNTEER with a Garelochhead-based youth project has highlighted the importance of physical activity in improving mental wellbeing - after completing a half marathon to raise funds for the organisation which helped her during her own tough times.

Route 81 youth worker Ruth Smith ran the Liverpool Rock ‘n Roll race in October, raising £225 for the group which has supported her throughout her early teenage years.

The project provides a safe place to meet and a variety of opportunities for young people aged 11-17 living within the Hermitage Academy catchment area.

And after earning many career and life opportunities from her involvement with the organisation, she said she was keen to give something back.

“In my early adulthood I suffered with depression,” said Ruth. “I lost my passion for everything and struggled with daily life.

“Thanks to the amazing support from the youth project, I slowly found my feet and always knew I had someone to turn to. Knowing I had this available was a vital lifeline in my journey with depression.

“With the winter months slowly creeping up on us I knew I needed a physical challenge to keep the serotonin flowing as the darker nights really trigger SAD (seasonal affective disorder) which, as someone who has suffered with depression knows, can be pretty scary.

“I pushed myself mentally and physically to train - and if you know me I wouldn’t run for a bus.”

Ruth is hoping to spread the message to fellow youngsters who may be struggling that regular exercise can make a huge difference.

She said: “I wanted to raise awareness about how physical activity can improve your mental health from a first-hand experience.

“I recently trained as a mental health champion. This opportunity has given me the ability to support young people struggling with their mental health.

“Route 81 always needs funds to keep their centre running and to allow adult volunteers like myself to come and work and support the young people, which is why I wanted to do this fund-raiser.

“I can vow for how lifesaving having access to a mental health champion can be and I truly believe I wouldn’t be here without the support I received from Route 81.”

Route 81 team leader Michelle Macdonald said: “Ruth is an inspiration to all of us. She is a fantastic volunteer youth worker and a strong advocate for promoting positive mental health.

“The young people have still to decide what Ruth’s hard earned cash will be spent on, but all agree it will be something meaningful and lasting – watch this space.”
