A HELENSBURGH town centre street which has been repeatedly closed to traffic because of a dangerous building is set to shut again next week.

Argyll and Bute Council has issued a traffic regulation order advising that East Clyde Street will be closed between Sinclair Street and Maitland Street.

The closure will take effect at 8am on Monday, January 31, and will run until 5pm on Friday, February 4 to allow waterproofing work on the notorious building at 5-7 East Clyde Street.

The council says the stretch of the A814 may be reopened earlier if work is completed ahead of schedule.

A council spokesperson said: “As a result of the private owners failing to take action, the council is having to carry out essential waterproofing works to the building to prevent it falling into further disrepair.

"Discussions regarding long-term solutions are ongoing.”

A report tprepared for a full council meeting in September revealed that a developer had come forward with a proposal to demolish and rebuild the unoccupied building at 5-7 East Clyde Street.

A solution with the building’s owners was thought to be “unlikely”, and a council-led option was not favoured due to the length of time required for a compulsory purchase order.

The deteriorating state of the building has forced the closure of that section of East Clyde Street on several occasions in recent years.
