Two Helensburgh charities joined forces on Saturday to host an event to help people get back out and socialising in the community.

The Spring Fling event, organised by Grey Matters and Visiting Friends, saw locals get together in Helensburgh Parish church to enjoy a cup of tea and some live music entertainment.

Jayne Burnett, Visiting Friends manager, said: “Everyone had a smashing time – it was a great atmosphere. Everyone just enjoyed the opportunity to see friends, and have a blether. It made them feel normal again!”

Visiting Friends provides a befriending service for those who may feel lonely or socially isolated, while Grey Matters Active Ageing supports those over 60 in leading an active and fulfilling life by providing a range of groups and activities.

Around 95 members from both organisations attended the ‘Spring Fling’, making it the perfect opportunity for people to enjoy meeting old friends and make new ones after two long years of lockdown restrictions.

Local musician Mark Morrison, a singer and bagpiper and a well known performer at events throughout the area each spring and summer, was on hand to keep guests entertained.

Alison Gildea, Grey Matters Active Ageing’s manager, said: “The event was a resounding success – everyone really enjoyed the day. Our sincere thanks to Mark Morrison, who was fantastic and had everyone toe-tapping away.”

She added: “We would also like to say thank you to all the volunteers who helped on the day - they were amazing.”
