Shandon musician Louise Burnet has organised a ‘Sing for Ukraine’ event to raise much-needed funds for a truck carrying emergency medical supplies to be sent to the war-torn country.

The sing-along led by Louise and her weekly ukulele group ‘Rhukulele’ will take place on Friday 1 April 2022 at 2.30pm at the Rhu Cmmunity Hall, with doors opening at 2pm.

Louise said: “I think we’re all being affected by the Ukraine war; we’re all absolutely horrified by it, so it’s nice to feel you’re doing something to help. Otherwise we all feel so powerless.”

She said hosting a 60s, 70s and 80s themed sing along was the first thing she could think of to fund medical equipment and supplies, including bandages, antibiotics, pain killers and foil blankets to help the people of Ukraine. The event is open to people of all ages.

Song sheets will be handed out to the audience on arrival and participants will receive a cup of tea and some homemade baking. A donation of £10 is suggested, with the money going directly towards supplies for the truck.

Louise explained that her friend Anne Varvill, a general nurse practitioner in London with contacts in Ukraine, has arranged for the armoured truck loaded with life-saving supplies to be driven to Eastern Ukraine and received by those in the medical profession.

So far, Anne has raised over £6,000 to buy items and Louise hopes to help her friend reach her £8,000 fundraising target.

She said: “Everyone who has heard about it so far has said they are really keen to come and people who can’t come have very generously said they would make a donation.”
