It was a case of so near, but so far for Helensburgh Rugby Club’s P6 team at the Strathendrick Mini Rugby Festival on Sunday.

The team remained unbeaten throughout their pool matches, with three wins and a draw, and only missed out on the final by means of a lower try count compared to Lenzie.

Burgh started the festival strongly, with tries from Donnie, Harry and George contributing to a 4-0 win over a strong Birkmyre team.

Next up was a first ever clash with Hillfoots, from Tillicoultry. A very competitive match swung each way several times, before Harry surged up the left touchline to touch down in the corner, and complete a 3-2 victory.

A more one sided match vs the tournament host’s Whites team followed, with Helensburgh winning 5-2, with tries again from George and Donnie, along with a lovely looping run to the corner from Flynn, and a great finish from Zach going over the line with four defenders trying to stop him short.

The final match against the other unbeaten side, Lenzie, brought tries from the flying George and Harry, with a brilliant run up the blindside from a ruck on the left touchline, and resulted in a 2-2 draw.

Unfortunately Lenzie qualified for the final over Burgh by virtue of more tries scored throughout the tournament, where they lost out to Strathendrick’s Blues team.

Coach Mark Bone said: “Overall it was a great performance from Helensburgh, continuing what has been a very successful season for the P6 team, which has so far brought 19 victories and two draws from 26 matches.”
