THE sound of music is to ring out from Helensburgh’s Victoria Halls as musicians from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO) prepare to descend on the town this weekend after a two-year, Covid-enforced break.

Taking place on Sunday, June 19, the event will see the renowned ensemble’s leader, Stephanie Gonley, direct its string players in a wide-ranging evening of music making.

Among the repertoire set to feature is Schubert’s Rondo in A, in which Stephanie will feature as soloist.

Also on the programme for the concert are Elgar’s Serenade for Strings, Britten’s Simple Symphony and Arthur Foote’s Suite for Strings.

The concert will culminate in a performance of Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances, bringing the curtain down on a varied evening of music.

SCO leader Stephanie commented: “The SCO’s Scottish Summer Tours Series is a real highlight in our annual performing calendar.

“It’s an opportunity to travel to so many wonderful communities across Scotland and to play in more unusual venues, big and small.

“After a three-year break from our Scottish touring, I am filled with anticipation and excitement to get back on the road with the orchestra.

“Helensburgh is a regular and much-loved stop on our summer tour, and we’ve had some memorable concerts at the fantastic Victoria Halls.

“Returning this year will give us a chance to connect with friends who would ordinarily have to travel to Glasgow to watch us perform.”

Stephanie continued: “For this concert, I’ll be leading our brilliant string players.

“I hope in the performance – which includes music by Elgar, Bartók, Britten, Schubert, Foote and Caroline Shaw - the audience will find plenty to stimulate and surprise.”

Gavin Reid, chief executive of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra: “We’re excited to head off on our summer tour across Scotland once again, inviting music-lovers to join us in celebrating the power of music in connecting people, building communities, and bringing the nation together.

“We look forward to welcoming audiences to share in the joy of live music-making, both in the concert hall and beyond.”

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra’s Helensburgh concert begins at 7.30pm on June 19 in the Victoria Halls. More information is at sco.org.uk/events/sco-strings.
