SELFLESS Helensburgh residents have been honoured for their contributions to the local community.

The Morrisons Local Hero Awards nominees gathered on Wednesday, June 22, as the winners were announced.

Gordon Turnbull won the Local Hero award for his 47-years of teaching at Hermitage Academy.

The Organisation award went to Grey Matters Active-Ageing and was presented to Alison Gildea for her management of the charity.

Barbara McDonald was presented with the People’s Choice Award for her work as district commissioner of the Scouts, as well as her volunteering with the Helensburgh and Lomond Foodbank.

The Eco Warrior title was awarded to Plastic Free Helensburgh’s Sarah Davies, who is also involved in Fun First and Helensburgh Community Council.

Alison Sturgeon, community champion at Morrisons, said: “We had a fantastic evening with our nominees and winners, we feasted on treats in our cafe and presented them with award certificates, plants and wine.

“Thank you to the Minuteman Press for helping to make the certificates.”
