A FORMER Hermitage Academy pupil is preparing to perform at Glastonbury this weekend as a backing vocalist for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Emma Brammer, 40, is currently touring with the former Oasis star and has played gigs at outdoor venues across the UK and Ireland throughout June.

She will now finish off the tour by playing the acclaimed Pyramid stage at Worthy Farm on Saturday June 25, ahead of headliner Paul McCartney.

Emma said: “It’s obviously massive for us. I’m almost trying not to think about it – everything feels like it’s working towards that.

“It’s going to be nuts, and I’m just trying not to freak out about it.”

The singer and her band previously toured with Noel as backing vocalists for his support act - Supergrass frontman Gaz Coombes.

Emma said: “Noel saw us singing at Edinburgh Castle and thought, ‘I think I’ll have them’.

“He asked us to come and record some stuff for a couple of EPs and then we ended up joining him on stage for a few songs on that tour, so it just kind of developed from there.

“We were terrified the first time we went into the studio with him, because you just want to do a good job, but he’s really friendly and really funny.

“It’s been lovely to get to know the rest of his band as well, because they’re all absolute legends.

“Chris, who plays the drums, was in The La’s, and Russ was in The Zutons, so he co-wrote Valerie which is just nuts.

“Everyone’s an amazing musician in their own right and we’re just standing there trying not to feel like complete impostors.”

Emma grew up in Cove and Kilcreggan, but now lives in Kent with her husband Tom and children Elliot, 10, and Axel, 8.

She credits the Academy with her love for music and singing, and the career which has grown from it.

She said: “They had a great music department - everyone was just really supportive, and cool, and nice. I hid there most of the time.

“I loved being in all choirs – I was in the Gaelic, junior and senior choirs, and the wind band too.

“I just loved singing and it was my favourite thing to do.

“I remember there was a talent show at school, and some of the boys were doing Oasis covers – everyone was such a massive fan of them.

“I think if you had told me at that point that when I was 40 I’d be singing in Noel Gallagher’s band, I would never have believed you – it’s ridiculous really.”

Emma’s set with the band will be shown on BBC Two on Saturday at 9pm.

The BBC iPlayer will also run live streams from the festival’s five main stages throughout the weekend.
