Tennis players from across the area gathered at Helensburgh Tennis Club at the weekend to raise funds for the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity and in memory of the highly respected local coach and player Marie Dixon.

Marie coached at Craighelen and Cardross as well as playing at Helensburgh Tennis Club, and the glorious weather saw a record-breaking turnout of 46 players from Kirktonhill, Cardross, Craighelen and Helensburgh taking part.

The mixed doubles format saw Craighelen’s Gerry Black and Helensburgh’s Jackie Hunter win in a thrilling final against Iain MacLaren from Helensburgh and Elaine Clancy from Cardross.

More than £600 was raised by the players through entry fees, donations, and a raffle. The event has been taking place for more than 15 years and this was the highest amount raised to date.

Marie’s family of Maeve, Angus, Eric, and their families also took part and thanked everyone for keeping their mother’s memory alive and for raising a fantastic amount.

Eileen Drummond from Craighelen played alongside Marie on many occasions and thanked everyone for their donations and keeping the memory of Marie in everyone’s minds each year.
