AS the ninth anniversary of the death of a much-loved Garelochhead husband and father approaches, a Helensburgh charity set up in his memory is reminding people that it’s available to help make big differences in small ways to others in need.

Established by Kelly Andrews following the untimely death, from cancer, in July 2013, of her husband Gary, the registered charity, Gary Andrews - Remember a Life, has been bringing light to dark times for many local families also hit by cancer or other critical illness.

Gary died after taking ill while on holiday with Kelly and son Joshua on the Costa Dorada.

After a series of one-off events in Gary’s memory, Kelly officially set up Gary Andrews - Remember a Life in March 2018.

Its supporters can often be seen out and about in the town on fund-raising challenges of one sort or another, from round the world walks to half marathon runs, cycles, car washes, raffles and other fun events like their very successful lockdown wine tasting.

The money raised as a result of these challenges doesn’t go to the big national campaigns, but stays locally and goes towards helping other families living with cancer or critical illness to make special memories or to ease the burdens imposed by illness.

Kelly said: “We make donations of up to £250 a time, and it can be for all kinds of things including paying an everyday bill or for transport, buying new nightwear, clothing or equipment, or maybe something as simple as going out for a special meal to make memories or perhaps have a night away.

“Cancer and critical illness can have a major effect on not just the patient but their family and friends and we are able to ease the burden a little in whatever way suits the needs of the particular patient.

“If we can make life a bit more comfortable, we will do it. It can be something as simple as providing a take-away dinner or an afternoon tea.”

In her quest for funds, Kelly has been given a great deal of support and companionship from her own family and friends and from local businesses, including Humbles, where she works, Car Blitz, Autopoint, Ellie’s Cellar, Graze to Amaze and the Journey as well as Ardencaple Football Club, Garelochhead Bowling Club and others.

Kelly and two other runners have recently completed the Babcock 10K Series in Helensburgh, Dumbarton and Glasgow.

She said: “I like to do something for all the major events – Gary’s birthday, Christmas, Easter, our wedding anniversary and others – and my son Joshua and his cousin Craig also get involved through things like the walking challenges and organising a memorial charity football match.

“I’m so grateful to everyone who supports me, takes part or helps in any other way.

“They all help to make a difference for people in difficult times and help me to keep Gary’s memory alive.”
