ATHLETES and fitness fans from all across Scotland and beyond are making final preparations to descend on Luss this weekend for two full days of fitness and fun.

The free LussFest event, on Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17, will feature live talks, workshops, interviews and demonstrations along with music, dance and yoga sessions, food stalls and a licensed bar.

The weekend will also feature Scotland’s largest individual ‘functional fitness’ competition, WOD on the Loch, with a line-up of top athletes who have earned their place in the event following a series of tough qualifiers held online earlier this year, competing in the event arena, in the water and on the hills.

And there will be local links to the event too in the form of Lewis Serpell and Ryan Morrison, who are both former pupils of Lomond School in Helensburgh.

Ryan has since founded the Rival Kit fitness clothing brand, which won a contract last year to supply training and race day kit to the men’s and women’s teams in the world-famous Boat Race, and which will supply clothing for the athletes, staff and judges this weekend as the main sponsor of the event.

Lewis, meanwhile, has gone on to become a Crossfit athlete and coach since leaving school and will have an eye on a podium place in the fitness competition as he prepares to fly out and compete in Australia.

Also present, among the event’s market stall holders, will be Alex Duff, from Dumbarton, the founder of sports nutrition brand Lyft Powders.

A spokesperson for the event said: “Thankfully there are no Covid restrictions in place so we can welcome as many as possible into the event field.

“For this reason LussFest is free entry, and visitors can enjoy the market, kids activities, bar, food trucks and on stage entertainment free of charge.

“Entry to WOD on the Loch fitness competition in the central ring of the festival will be ticketed.

“We would like to attract as many as possible and welcome locals, tourists and passers by to LussFest free of charge.”

A team from the BBC will also be present filming for an episode of The Adventure Show.

The festival runs from 10am to 8pm on both Saturday and Sunday at the Luss Highland Games field in the village.
