Cake was the reward for hard crafting work as young people visited Helensburgh Community Hub for a family summer event.

Many regular activities and clubs are off during the holidays so the Hub wanted to offer something for all ages to enjoy.

The session included crafting and a chance for the young people to enjoy some stories while parents could catch up over a cuppa.

Reflecting on the event, Hub development manager Gill Simpson said: “I know what it’s like to have energetic youngsters in the house and it can make the school holidays feel pretty long sometimes.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

“This was just about giving families a place to go and letting the kids have some fun crafting and enjoy listening to some stories while parents had a cuppa and a chat.

“One mum said she was really grateful to have something to bring her kids to on a Saturday because she works during the week so can’t often go to those weekday play sessions.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

“We will also be offering something for older kids later in the holidays when they can Write a Story in a Week with author Robin Scott-Elliot. There are still a few spaces left and it will be a really great workshop with a fun celebration at the end.

“Meanwhile one of our new volunteers came up with a great idea to hold a pop-up summer bargain book sale - so we are going to do that next Tuesday, July 19.”

Helensburgh Advertiser:

Gill continued: “The Book Nook relies entirely on donations and we are so very grateful to everyone who brings in books for us - the variety we get is amazing and, as a complete bookworm, one of the best bits of my job to open up the boxes of donations to find all the treasures inside.

“As the Book Nook is becoming more widely known we are getting lots of great stock and we can’t fit it all on our shelves so that’s when one of our volunteers came up with the idea of holding a pop-sale of the books and jigsaws.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

“And the summer holidays are a great time to get stuck into a good book so I think the pop-up sale idea was inspired.

“The Book Nook is a really special part of the Hub - our volunteers are brilliant at making people feel welcome, helping them to find what they are looking for or give them ideas of what to read.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

“It is really important to us to encourage people to read for pleasure so we want to do we everything we can to make books easily accessible to everyone.”

Write a Story in a Week runs from August 1-5.
