Helensburgh’s cinema has received a funding boost thanks to support from a local charity.

The Tower accepted a cheque for £1,000 from Helensburgh and District Round Table last week, with the money set to support a number of projects.

The Round Table’s funding will aid the delivery of the cinema’s Silver Screen programme, which offers two showings a week for those aged 60 and over.

More than 80 people attend these screenings weekly. Part of the funding awarded will go towards providing cakes to audiences in the coming months.

The funding will also be used to purchase branded clothing for the volunteers who help to run the cinema.

Andrew Duncan, chairman of Helensburgh and District Round Table, said: “Our raison d’être is to support projects in the community and help Helensburgh thrive.

“We see The Tower as a key component of Helensburgh’s identity and we are delighted to be in a position to help them.

“It is important for people from Helensburgh to realise that we’re giving on their behalf as the funds come from the money we collect at our various events. I would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone who’s ever attended a Round Table gathering.”

The Tower’s volunteer co-ordinator, Donna Hicks, added: “On behalf of the volunteers at The Tower Digital Arts Centre, I’d like to thank the Helensburgh and District Round Table for their extremely generous grant.

“It will enable us to buy yummy treats for our lovely Silver Screen guests who come along every Tuesday or Thursday and enjoy lunch and a film.

“It’s a fabulous way to combat loneliness in older people and encourage individuals to the cinema who might otherwise not come.

“The Tower is a charity and is run by a small team of staff and volunteers. This money is significant to us and we are truly grateful.”
