HELENSBURGH wheelchair tennis hero Gordon Reid is on top of the world once more after helpling Team GB win the World Team Cup.

The former Hermitage Academy pupil joined teammates Alfie Hewett and Ben Bartram in lifting the trophy in Vilamoura, Portugal.

Under coach Martyn Whait, the Brits won the men’s title on Sunday, May 7 after defeating the defending champions from the Netherlands 2-0.

And for Reid the title was achieved in the face of adversity - in the shape of a lower back injury that troubled him throughout the tournament.

Reid said: “I’ve had a few issues with some tightness in my lower back this week and it was a little bit worse today, but I had some good treatment on the court and managed to scrap through a bit of a tough period in the second set.

“But I finished it strongly and obviously I’m really pleased to get it over and done with in two sets and then sit back and watch Alfie finish the job.”

Reid, who is ranked ninth in the world, extended his winning run to 20 matches against Dutchman Tom Egberink, before Hewett made sure of the title by beating Ruben Spaargaren 7-5, 6-2.

It's yet another title to add to the growing collection for Reid and Hewett, who played their first major championship together at Wimbledon in 2016 and winning their latest Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in Melbourne this January.

Alfie added: “Obviously I’m really happy to get the win today.

“It's been four years in the making and it’s not been an easy few years with Graham being injured last year and things like Covid.

“We've been very dominant the whole week so to finish off in straight sets without it going to a deciding doubles is something that we can be very pleased about.

“It means a lot to win this event and to add GB to that trophy one more time.”

Great Britain’s win at the World Team Cup marks a return to the tournament after the 2020 competition was cancelled due to Covid, while a combination of injuries and illness meant they could not compete in 2021 and 2022.

Great Britain’s junior team also won their category at the championships, beating the US team for the title.

Organised by the International Tennis Federation, the tournament saw teams from 22 countries compete across four divisions - men’s, women’s, quads and juniors – with Great Britain participating in all but the quads category.
