HELENSBURGH Tennis Club’s men’s second team made a winning start to their new season with a 7-2 victory at home to Cambuslang.

Cameron White and Bobby Kerr playing at number one quickly got into their stride winning the first two sets 6-3, 6-4 – and though they fell behind 1-4 in the third, made a great comeback to level the set at 4-4.

In a tight ninth game the Cambuslang couple managed to break serve to give them hope of taking the set, and the visiting duo led 40-30 in the 10th with a set point – but a deep forehand from Cameron allowed Bobby to intercept at the net and volley the return, for a winner which saved the point and enabled the Burgh pair to take the game.

For a second time the visitors had a set point at 6-5 up, but once again Cameron and Bobby dug deep and saved it to force the set into a tie-break.

All four player held their serve until a missed volley allowed Cambuslang to serve for their third set point at 6-5 – but a brilliant pass down the line from Cameron seemed to destroy any confidence the visitors had, and the home pair wrapped up the next three points to take the set and win the match 3-0.

Bill Ram and David McCowan had a tougher match at second couple, losing the opening set 4-6 – and though they came back to win the second set 6-4, they were unable to keep up the comeback in the third set against a talented Cambuslang pair and lost it 4-6.

There were, however, no such problems at third couple, where Helensburgh’s Hadden Smith and Stephen Humphreys brushed aside their opponents to complete an excellent night’s work for the home team.

The Burgh men’s third team, meanwhile, did even better, hitting top form at home to beat Drumchapel 9-0.

Harry Gould and Iain MacLaren won 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, while Keith Love and Graham Court won 6-2, 6-2, 6-0, and Paul Clifford and Matt Mackie won 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, with the overall result ensuring that Helensburgh

The men’s first team were at home to Giffnock on Friday evening and made it three out of three for the Helensburgh men with a great 6-3 victory.

Meanwhile, the Burgh men’s over-60 team drew 3-3 in their opening match of the season against Milngavie.

Iain MacLaren and Harry Gould made it two straight-sets wins from their two matches together during the course of the week, winning comfortably 6-1, 6-4, 6-4, but Keith Love and Stephen Humphreys struggled against a very competitive pair, losing all three of their sets.

The club’s ladies’ second team were also in action, but were unable to make an impact, losing by eight sets to one against a very strong Strathaven team – and it was a similar story for the ladies’ over-60 second team, who lost 6-0 against Milngavie.
