HELENSBURGH’S gents’ third team were the stars of the show during another busy week of action for the club, climbing to the top of their division with a brilliant 9-0 win at home to Kirkhill.

The tie of the night was at second couple where Keith Love and Paul Clifford took the opening set with ease 6-2.

The Burgh pair appeared to take their foot of the gas in the second set, falling 4-0 behind – but a change in tactics saw them roar back to level the set at 4-4.

The visitors broke Keith’s serve to seize the advantage again – but left-hander Paul gave his opponents little chance of returning his wide, swerving serves, with the pair taking the game to love to level at 5-5.

Keith and Paul upped their game again to break the visitors’ serve, and this time there was to be no looking back as they went on to win the set, and the third, for a straight-sets win.

There were no dramas on court 1, where Harry Gould and Iain MacLaren won easily 6-2, 6-0, 6-2 – or on court 3, where Graham Court and James McGuckin strolled to a 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 win.

The gents’ first team found the going tougher at home to a youthful Thorn Park team: all three Helensburgh pairs lost their opening sets, but soon got their game together, with Alan MacBeath and Ciaran Losh at first couple winning the next two 6-2, 6-3.

At second couple Felix Carpenter and David Reid lost the second set 4-6 but won the third 6-4, while Stephen Lewis and Kevin Steven lost by two sets to one at third couple to leave Helensburgh beaten 5-4 overall.

The gents’ fourth team found neighbours Kirktonhill too hot to handle, losing 6-3 – with all three winning Burgh sets coming from Clive Charters and Ralph Ward, who are turning out to be one of the club’s most consistent pairs.

The ladies’ 60+ first team secured a draw away to Bearsden, with Val Pace and Soerjan Young winning their match in straight sets.

However, the ladies’ second team are finding the competition hard, and are still looking for their first win of the season.

They failed to take any sets from their trip to Hillhead, but team captain Barbara Gillies hailed her team’s fighting spirit and is looking forward to hosting Springwells at home in their next match.
