Information on the nine applicants for Helensburgh’s waterfront development has been revealed.

Retailers, eateries, community groups, an EV charging hub and a hotel are all interested in the project, according to Argyll and Bute Council.

While the names of the applicants are not public knowledge, the council has been able to reveal details on the groups – many of which are from the third sector - that have submitted applications.

A council representative said: “The significant level of investment from the council in Helensburgh has stimulated a high calibre of private sector interest who share our vision of transforming the waterfront into a vibrant space.

“The development will provide an additional boost to the local economy, creating employment and leisure opportunities for residents and visitors.

“Included in the submissions are household retail names, food outlets, community proposals, an EV charging hub and hotel.”

The council also said it will be holding workshops across June and July as a community engagement exercise and a way of finding out the public’s opinions.

There will also be a workshop for school pupils to gather opinions from Helensburgh residents of all ages.

They added: “We are currently preparing to undertake a community engagement exercise in June and July. This will involve community groups via workshops to collate feedback on the proposals.

“We are also planning a workshop with local school pupils to gather their thoughts.”

The 1.38 acre site is located on the land which once hosted the town’s old swimming pool which shut last year in August as the Helensburgh Leisure Centre was set to open in September 2022.

The council has stated that the site will house multiple retailers and will not be the location of one large business.

The potential for one large retailer such as a supermarket developing in the space was a fear some locals have expressed, as concerns were raised over the possible effects on small businesses.

Surveyor Avison Young has been appointed by the council to market the site and help attract bidders.

The development is shortlisted at the National Planning Awards and in the council’s Sustainable Design Awards.
