AN EXPERT on moths will shed some fascinating light on these little-understood but valuable creatures at an event near Helensburgh later this month.

Local moth expert - or 'lepidopterist', to give him his official title - Alan Kerr will lead a 'Moth Morning' event at Geilston Garden in Cardross.

Moths are important pollinators and a valuable part of any garden’s ecosystem.

Alan will set up a moth trap in the garden overnight, and in the morning identify and tell those taking part in the event about the moths caught.

A spokesperson for the Friends of Geilston group, which is organising the event, said: "No moths will be hurt in the course of this event: they will all be released to return another night!"

The event takes place on Thursday, June 15 from 10am until 11.30am.

The cost is £5 for adults and £2 for accompanied children.

Normal National Trust for Scotland admission fees apply for entry to the garden, meaning it's free for NTS members and £1 for Young Scot Cardholders.

See the NTS website for details of entry fees and membership.
