A BRAND new 'edible garden' in Rhu is beginning to take shape - and the co-ordinator of the project is now looking for an assistant to take it to the next stage.

A team of volunteers have been working hard to get the garden, at Rhu and Shandon Community Centre in the village's Hall Road, into shape and create space for growing lots of fruit and vegetables.

The polytunnel frame is now in place and the ground being dug over to prepare beds within the tunnel and form a central path.

Once this is completed the polythene cover can be fitted and the ground will be ready for year-round growing.

Sue Thornley from the project's organising committee said: "We have been so lucky with the weather as sunshine lifts everyone’s spirits. And the garden is a lovely place to work.

Helensburgh Advertiser:

"DCF have carried out joiner repairs to the wooden hut used for the project’s tools and have also put in an outside water tap as part of their local community payback. We are very grateful for this support.

"Shortly we shall be digging the first new beds and the project will move up a gear. Our project coordinator now needs an assistant for approximately five hours per week to help run volunteer sessions especially with pre-school children and their parents."

Sue added: "Do come and visit the garden – sessions are held currently on Monday and Thursday morning but they are occasionally at weekends too. All are welcome."
