THE deadline is fast approaching for feedback on plans to split Helensburgh from Lomond communities in the next Scottish Parliament elections.

A consultation on dividing the constituency closes on Saturday, June 17 after a month, following a proposal to change the Dumbarton constituency.

It currently extends from Dumbarton to Arrochar and the Rosneath penisula.

But Boundaries Scotland has proposed putting Rhu, Garelochhead, Rosneath peninsula, Luss, and Arrochar in the Argyll and Bute constituency.

A new "Dumbarton and Helensburgh" constituency would cover the rest of the current areas.

And it would also include the Clydebank Waterfront ward, splitting that town in two.

Former councillor George Freemman urged everyone to submit responses to the consultation.

He said: "Everyone that I have spoken to believes that this would be crazy.

"This is not about the individuals who are the MSPs at the moment for our area whether you support them or not."

Jackie Baillie, who has been MSP for the Dumbarton constituency since it was formed in 1999, told the Advertiser: “I will be opposing the changes as I don’t believe that it is right to split up areas which are so closely linked.

“Helensburgh and Lomond come as a package and share education provision, health services, transport links and travel to work areas. It simply doesn’t make any sense to separate the area.

“The proposals from the boundary commission also ignore the significant historic links in the area which also formed part of Dumbarton District Council dating back to 1975.”
