Helensburgh Tennis Club’s over-60 men’s team proved age is no barrier to success by clinching promotion after finishing top of their division at the conclusion of their Summer League campaign.

Team captain Iain MacLaren praised the team’s consistent winning performances, with Alastair Hope, Bill Ram, Harry Gould and himself all ranking in the six top players of more than 90 players in the Division.

Other contributing players over the season were Keith Love and Stephen Humphries.

The last three matches against Busby, Langside and Western all ended in Helensburgh wins by six sets to love as the Burgh team amassed 30 points to finish six clear of their nearest challengers.

It’s a second successive promotion for the Helensburgh team who will now play First Division tennis next season.

Elsewhere, the Helensburgh ladies’ second team had a great 7-2 win against Glasgow University Staff, and the ladies’ 60+ 1 firts team won against Cambuslang and neighbours Craighelen.

Helensburgh’s men’s first team have found the going tougher this season, but have won both their matches in the relegation play-off section so far – meaning their final match, against Nuffield Milngavie, is a must-win match if they’re to retain their place in the First Division.

The men’s third team, meanwhile, sit top of their division with one match still to play – though their hopes of winning the league depend on the outcome of other fixtures.

As with the men’s 60+ team, the top three players of more than 90 in the division all come from Helensburgh, in the form of Graham Court, Keith Love and Matt Mackie – while the team’s other regular players, Paul Clifford, Harry Gould and Iain MacLaren, are all in the division’s top 10.

The men’s fourth team won their last two matches 8-1 and 9-0, and currenly sit mid-table. Ralph Ward and Clive Charters are the top-ranked individuals in a division of almost 100 players, with octogenarian Ralph sitting at number one.
