A GROUP of Helensburgh volunteers were all fingers and thumbs thanks to a mammoth 12 hour 'sew-a-thon' to help support troops in the Middle East.

Louise Cairns, area co-ordinator for the Helensburgh branch of the Support Our Soldiers charity, organised the Sew for Soldiers event at the Churchill Family Centre.

Aided by fellow organisers Sophia Ramage and Richard Keller from Naval Personnel and Family Services, Louise hoped to rally volunteers in a unique bid to help servicemen and women currently based in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Louise said: "Many of us hadn’t sewn in years, some of us not since school days, but we gave it our best shot."

As the school holidays approached, children across Helenbsurgh and Lomond got into the summer spirit with a host of games and activities to bring a touch of sunshine to even the drizzliest day.

Our photographer's end-of-term tour took him to primary schools across the area, including Kilcreggan Primary, where youngsters hunted for bargains at a fabulous car boot sale and got to clown around with entertainer Simon McFarlane.

A TEAM effort from toddler mums in support of Helensburgh’s St Columbas Under-5s saw over 300 designer cup cakes displayed on stalls in Colquhoun Square.

With toppings like chocolate dipped strawberries and Belgian truffle, the mouthwatering cakes sold out within two hours.

Trish Chalmers, committee secretary, said: “The event was a massive success with a £270 profit.”

The cash raised enabled the group to stay open through the summer holidays.

Pupils at St Joseph’s Primary added a touch of magic to their school at a special open night for friends and family.

Youngsters in P6 transformed their classroom into the great hall of a castle as part of an innovative Curriculum for Excellence Topic.

The children and their teacher, Miss Boyd, worked hard to create a magical place full of ancient stonework, panelled walls and tiny, leaded windows.

Finishing touches included suits of armour, portraits, a hearth complete with blazing fire and even a portcullis.
