Helensburgh residents have voiced their concern at the speed reached by some drivers on a busy road near Hermitage Academy.

One resident claimed that some vehicles reach 40mph, or even 50mph, on the stretch of Cardross Road between the Academy and the edge of town - where the limit is 30mph.

In addition to the school, the stretch of road at the east end of the town is also close to Bellway Homes' development of 145 new houses at Alder Gate.

One resident living close to the school said: “I am getting increasingly concerned and frustrated at the amount of motorists not adhering to the 30 mph zone at the dual carriageway near the school undertaking tailgating and cars doing in excess of 40 mph.

“Someone is going to be hurt soon and I see this on a daily basis.”

He also mentioned that he believed he saw a car drive over 50 miles an hour while undertaking just outside of the school.

In response to the concerns, Helensburgh police confirmed they have received complaints of speeding motorists and said they are monitoring the stretch of road.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “This section of the road is a location that there are occasional complaints from members of the public about, often from local residents.

“Both the uniformed response policing teams based at Helensburgh and the dedicated road policing unit based at Dumbarton spend time policing this stretch of the road and enforcement and action is taken as appropriate.”

The minimum fine for speeding on non-motorway roads in Scotland is £100, but this can increase to a maximum of £1,000.

Offending drivers will also have penalty points added to their licence and could be disqualified from driving if they get 12 or more points within three years.

Argyll and Bute Council have been contacted for comment.
