A Helensburgh herbologist hopes to show people the powers of harvest in the winter during her guided walk later this month.

Friends of Geilston, which runs Geilston Garden, has invited back herbologist and Helensburgh local Nicky Brownrig to lead a forage walk in their gardens on Saturday, September 23.

Graduating with a degree in herbology from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Nicky wants to show the variety of plants that can be used for remedies through the winter and how to preserve different harvests.

Nicky said: “I’m delighted to be offering another walk at Geilston Garden to show people what our ancestors would have been harvesting at this time of year, both for eating and for making remedies to support their health through the winter months.

"There’s an abundance of fruits, nuts, seeds, roots and leaves to gather in this season of ‘mellow fruitfulness’.

"The walk will be a good opportunity for participants to expand their foraging repertoire beyond brambles and to learn different ways of preserving what they harvest.

"I’ll also cover the medicinal properties of the plants we encounter and how to make traditional remedies such as robs, oxymels and electuaries which soothe sore throats, coughs and colds."

The 90-minute walk, which will depart at 10.30am, is suitable for adults and is held at a slow pace making them accessible for different abilities.

All participants will receive a handout with recipes as part of the event.
