Forces families and veterans took a chance to relive their youths with a weekend party in Helensburgh.

Armed forces charity SSAFA welcomed more than 170 people to the Commodore Hotel on Saturday for the 70s/80s disco.

In all, the event is expected to raise nearly £7,000 and organisers hailed it as a success.

Captain of HM Naval Base Clyde, Captain Boyd, formally opened the night and was supperted by five Royal Marines (Boat Service).

Anne Townsend, SSAFA branch chair, said: “It was our first ever big event, and we were bowled over by how successful it was. Everyone had a great time, many dressed up, and the 70/80’s music made it a hit.

"So much so that many asked when we are going to do it again! Special thanks to Janet Mulvaney who organised it. Janet and her small team were amazing.”

Janet Mulvaney, organiser, said: “Everyone was in the party spirit from the start and many had gone the extra mile in terms of costume. There are many people that made this night a success and made it special.

"Can I thank Captain Boyd, for taking the time to open the night and remind people why SSAFA is important to our forces, their families and our local community.

"My thanks to the five Royal Marines that volunteered to represent our armed forces. They went down a storm, on and off the dance floor.

"My final thanks would to the team that helped organise it, those businesses that contributed, Robert at the Commodore, Angus & Amelia Photography.

"But top, top thanks to those that bought tickets, let their hair down and partied like the old days.”
