Hallowe'en is now over and we are hurtling towards the festive season. We look back at a time when Barack Obama became the first African-American to be elected President of the United States, Lewis Hamilton won the 2008 Formula One Drivers' Championship and everyone was getting excited for Bonfire night.

All that happened in the first week of November 2008 – but what was going on closer to home in Helensburgh?

Helensburgh Advertiser: Hundreds turned out to see a visitor attraction in Helensbugh which, was hoped, would turn around the town’s tourist fortunes. The team behind the Helensburgh Heroes project unveiled their vision at a flagship event in the Commodore Hotel. The first-year Hermitage Academy pupil, from Cove, talked to the Ayrshire brothers who shot to fame after being panned by Simon Cowell on the hit ITV show. Helensburgh Advertiser: Two Kilcreggan mums have raised £500 for Breast Cancer Care. Mother of four Laura Cathro, whose dad was former councillor Danny Kelly, and her friend Nyree Peden, who has one child, ran in the Glasgow Half Marathon.
